Every year we predict that interior design and décor trends are about to make a turnaround ushering in some new and daring changes for the home and office space. After years of simple neutrals and hard-edged minimalist design, it appears that 2018 is finally escorting in some major style changes which will be impossible to ignore.

This year and going forward, lifestyle design, the things we decorate with, what we wear, and all those fashion and style items we love and that shape our personal realities, will demonstrate that the world is continuing to evolve in a manner too exciting for even the words on this page.

So, what’s new? What should be considered when selecting items of personal use, decorative, functional inspiration?

Firstly, let’s determine what is ready to be kicked to the curb. Those trends which are so tired and overdone that they, (yawn), are beyond the mainstream and should only be visible in everybody’s rear-view mirror. Here they are in no particular order:

Neutrals in design and decor

White, beige, taupe and most definitely gray are out, out, out. After years of dull and non-descript neutral tones, especially the ever-faithful gray in all it’s depths and hues the new spaces are embracing color, especially jewel tones. If you have recently invested in a completely neutral decorative scheme using any or all these non-colors take heart. You can spruce up those neutral spaces bringing them up to 2018 by adding shots of color through accessories. This means carpeting, art, pillows, artifacts, and other elements can take the dour neutral space and give it a surprising sense of humor and a completely updated look without spending ALL your brood’s inheritance.

The Industrial Loft Look

Especially the Thomas Edison lightbulb and fixtures that accompany it. Too overall cute, original at first. but now completely unoriginal and uninspiring to the max.  Remember that Karl Lagerfeld said that trendiness is the next thing to vulgarity and so we must assume he was including those trendy Thomas Edison lightbulbs and all other phony industrial design cues that accompanied them.

Millennial Pink    

Not the Utopian haven color that so many of us thought it might be, millennial pink is just one of those things that should be flushed away, never to be heard from again especially for those of us who simply don’t look good in the color. If you’re a winter like me than you’ll be positively gleeful that this insipid wilted rose shade is finally on the wane and we can look forward, with pleasure, to some real meaty colors to wear and surround ourselves with.

Minimalist Fireplace Surrounds and Other Architectural Elements

In recent years the design and architectural gurus have told us to almost eliminate, with gusto, principal elements in our homes including the centerpiece fireplace and other focal point details. This has been so prevalent that the all-important fireplace has almost disappeared, a terrible shame because historically it is one of the most romantic and life keeping forces in any abode. In 2018 we will once again celebrate the fireplace by bringing it out of hiding and framing it with sourced antique surrounds brought up to date with a modern and interesting paint jobs.

And what’s next?

Keep in mind that if you want a” to die for” home then that will involve taking some risks. Here are some of the most important cues, once again, in no particular order, that will give your personal space the excitement and overall zip that you crave.

Bold Jewel Toned Colours

On walls, furnishings, carpets and all accessory items these deep and delicious colors are the best and simplest way to define a modern space. Gone are the rather anal hard edges of the classic minimalist design. Sofas, chairs, mirrors, and even pieces like any version of a table will be more sensuous and welcoming if round oval or even amoeba-like. If you’re choosing a sofa or chairs, try upholstering in one of the new velvets which are much tougher than they look even with kids or pets. Using something as sexy as velvet, especially in one of the startlingly beautiful jewel tones will make the whole space sing and make you feel like a celebrity.  Strong but sexy is the latest look. Shapely but gender neutral is the statement of the day.

Accessorizing with Elements that have Real Meaning

Accessorizing your space is as important as accessorizing yourself. The modern room will not just be finished with mindless matched pieces but instead will be dotted with pieces hand selected from exotic destinations of the world. Whether you’ve been to these places or not, globally intentioning your home in this way, with objects that have special meaning to you, will be a colourful practice representing a fresh way of living and a true understanding of the new global village we are all a part of.  Picture a series of objects in your home that seem to have been hand-selected from exotic locations, textiles from a simple market in Peru or handcrafted pottery from a street vendor in Madagascar. Special, intimate but with a playful vibe.

So, there you have it. 2018 and the years going forward will be an exciting and colorful time in the arena of home décor and living.
